A bamboo whisk (chasen) is a traditional tool, used in Japanese tea ceremonies, for thoughtfully preparing matcha. Handcrafted with 100 delicate prongs, it is designed to disperse the powder, prevent clumps, aerate for a smooth, creamy blend, and create a frothy layer of crema.
Essential for an authentic matcha experience, it enhances both texture and flavour while inviting a mindful, everyday ritual.
How to Use
- Soak the whisk in warm water for a few minutes before use to soften the prongs and improve flexibility.
- Whisk gently yet briskly in a back-and-forth M-shaped motion, keeping the whisk slightly lifted from the base of the bowl.
- Continue whisking for 10–15 seconds, until smooth, clump-free, and lightly frothy.
Care
- Rinse or briefly soak the whisk in warm water after use to remove any remaining residue.
- Do not use soap or place in the dishwasher, as this may damage the bamboo.
- Place the whisk upright on its handle or on a stand and allow it to air-dry completely in a well-ventilated area.
- Once fully dry, store in a cool, dry place to help prevent mould and extend its lifespan.
With regular use and proper care, a bamboo whisk typically lasts several months. Replace when the prongs become brittle, misshapen, or begin to break.
